In tennis, a serve fault is a serve that does not meet the requirements for a good serve. A serve fault can occur if the serve is not struck correctly, if it does not land in the correct part of the service box, or if the server steps on or over the basepne while serving. The term "fault" is used to describe any serve that is not a legal serve. If a player serves a fault, they are allowed one more serve, known as a "second serve," in which they have another opportunity to make a legal serve. If the player serves another fault, it is counted as a point for the opponent.
