depend的基本意思是“吊”“悬”“挂”,作“依赖于”“依靠”解时主要指某种要出现的情况、未知的事实及待作出的决定等有关的事物的不确定性。引申可指信心十足或对某人充分相信。
depend多与on〔upon〕连用,只有当主语是it/that时,才可省略on〔upon〕,且只能接疑问词从句,其他情况都用作普通不及物动词。
It all depends或That depends表示“这很难说”“得看情况”。
在口语中,作为开场白或结束语的depend upon〔on〕 it意思是“无须怀疑”“我敢说”,可以看成是省略了you may〔can〕...。
